Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Pobitora is a wildlife reserve situated in Marigaon district in Assam. It is situated at the border of two Assam districts Kamrup and Nagaon. Pobitora is bounded by the Brahmaputra and Kalang rivers. It is located 50 km away from Guwahati. It covers an area of 38.8 km 2. Pobitora has dense population of one horned Indian rhinoceros.

  • Pobitora was declared a reserved forest in 1971.
  • In 1987 it was declared a wildlife sanctuary.


The climate of Pobitora is sub tropical monsoon type. Winter can be experienced from November to February. Temperature ranges between 9 to 20 degrees. Summer lasts from February to May. Temperature at this time is 12 to 35 degrees. Monsoon lasts from May to September. The area experiences average rainfall of 2000 mm.


Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for the dense population of one horned Indian rhinoceros. It is also known for the varied flora and fauna.


Pobitora is situated at a hilly area. The habitat comprises of Assam alluvial grassland. The place is rich in flora. The sanctuary is surrounded by beautiful mountains and trees. Coconut trees and various medicinal plants could be seen all around Pobitora.


  • Pobitora is famous for the one horned Indian rhinoceros. There are 84 rhinos in Pobitora. The rhino bearing capacity of the sanctuary has exceeded. Under the Indian Rhino Vision 2020, the joint venture programme of the department of environment and forest, govt of Assam, WWF India, the International Rhino Foundation and the US fish and wildlife service, six rhinos were translocated from Pobitora and introduced into Manas National Park.
  • Pobitora is inhabited by 2000 migratory birds and numerous reptiles. Pobitora is home to both wildlife and birdlife. Leopard, wild boar, barking deer, wild buffalo, jungle cat, wild pigs, etc are found in Pobitora.

The best time to travel Pobitora is from November to March.
